State historical-architectural, landscape and natural museum-preserve «Izborsk»

What is Izborsk? It is a settlement located in the territory of the Pechory district of the Pskov region, thirty kilometers from Pskov, the regional centre, eight hundred and fifty kilometers from Moscow and three hundred kilometers from Saint Petersburg.

For those who have been here it is not a mere placename on the map. There is much more to it , still unsolved. Ancient Izborsk is a unique blend of human element with nature. Here the sky fuses with water and earth, wild life, man, his ideas and his works.

The ancient Truvor’s gorodische (settlement) and the stone fortress, put up in the fourteenth century on Zheravya Hill is a brilliant example of the local skill to combine construction with natural factors and fit the natural background. The stone fortress seems to grow from the hill.

The natural beauty of the Izborsko-Mal’skaya valley is enhanced by manmade objects such as the ensemble of the Mal’sky Monastery, numerous chapels, ancient Truvor’s settlement with a big memorable cross.

It is a place where Russian history begins, where the first meetings with other peoples were held, the place where to this day their cultures, customs and beliefs interweave.

Izborsk is a north-west gate of Russia, it guards the mysteries of the past. It is a town standing on the springs, a stone town on Zheravya Hill, the place of inspiration for artists and writers. Its past and present are researched by archaeologists, ecologists, linguists and folklore specialists.
