State historical-architectural, landscape and natural museum-preserve «Izborsk»

Representatives of tourist companies of the Pskov Region got acquainted with the museum of history of the town which is located in close proximity to the border with Estonia.  

The tour was organized by State Committee of the Pskov Region for Culture to enable the professionals who are engaged in developing domestic tourism to get acquainted with the new unique place of interest.

The official opening of the museum took place on December 25, 2015. Izborsk State Museum Reserve initiated the creation of the museum in Pechory. Significant financial support was given by Russian Orthodox Church and Archimandrite Tikhon, the Father Superior of Pechory Assumption Monastery. Pskov Regional Administration provided great assistance as well. The museum has just been opened, but it managed to attract attention of both the townspeople and numerous tourists. On the eve of the Festival dedicated to the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin an exhibition of the unique lithographs by an outstanding Soviet graphic artist Lidiya Timoshenko was opened in the museum. The lithographs are part of Pskov Museum Reserve’s collection.   

During the guided tour of the new museum the representatives of regional tourist companies learned about the history of the town, the role of Pechory in the defense of the western borders of Russia during the Livonian and the Northern wars, during the Patriotic war of 1812, about the role of Pechory Assumption Monastery in the development of the town. The guests of the museum got acquainted with the unique collection of artifacts, which includes among other objects personal possessions of the participant of the Patriotic War of 1812 major-general Nikolay Vasilyevich Vokhin, uniforms of the period of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia and other significant objects.   The Soviet period is also very well represented in the museum. A separate exhibition room is dedicated to the history, culture and traditional crafts of the small in number Seto people.

In the end the museum professionals discussed future cooperation with the tour operators and shared with them their plans to create new interactive programs for visitors and to further develop of the museum exhibitions.
