State historical-architectural, landscape and natural museum-preserve «Izborsk»
9 March 2015

The opening of the exhibition of hand-made mittens and gloves will take place in “Izborsk” State Museum Preserve on March 10 at 13.00. The exhibition is organized in cooperation with Kristi Jõeste’s Ulas Guild. The exhibition is located in Merchant Shvedov’s house (Pechorskaya str., 32).

The exhibition features over 50 pairs of mittens and gloves, made by Estonian masters. Hand-made mittens and gloves demonstrate a variety of color and pattern combinations. Most of these gloves and mittens have been knitted according to old models, which have been preserved in many museums in Estonia.

By the 19th century Estonian mittens and gloves had developed their own traits, which make them easily recognizable from Latvian, Finnish and Russian mittens and gloves. In some areas in Estonia knitting techniques are still passed from mother to daughter.

Nowadays knitting mittens and gloves has become widely popular. Masters use a great variety of color and pattern combinations when creating them.

The exhibition will be open until March, 27.

The opening hours are from 09.00 to 17.00

You are very welcome in Izborsk!
