Last year Izborsk Museum Preserve applied for a grant within U.S.-Russia Peer-to-Peer Dialogue Program with its project entitled “Common Earth, Common History” and received the award.

The project’s objectives are: to establish professional contacts and develop a dialogue between museum professionals from Russia and the USA; to enable them to get acquainted with open-air museums, traditions, culture of the countries-participants of the project and exchange experience; to develop international cooperation and intercultural communication; to make the open-air museums-participants of the project more attractive to tourists.

Project’s activities include reciprocal visits of American and Russian museum professionals. The famous Colonial Williamsburg open-air museum became the project partner of Izborsk Museum Preserve. Colleagues from Colonial Williamsburg have great experience in conservation and restoration of monuments of architecture and culture, in their popularization, in organizing various interactive and theatre programs for visitors, in reviving historic trades etc. In the course of the project’s implementation a partner relationship was also established with Fort Ross State Historic Park.

Two groups of museum professionals from the US have already visited Izborsk.

In the framework of their visits the guests got acquainted with Izborsk Museum Preserve and its work and gave their professional advice on various aspects of its management. Colleagues from Colonial Williamsburg shared their experience in the sphere of conservation and preservation of architectural monuments, discussed with their colleagues from Izborsk Museum Preserve the principles and methodology of working with visitors, talked about interactive and theatre programs they organize in their museum. Colleagues from Fort Ross talked about their work, their ways to present stories to the public and engage visitors in learning the history of the place, about challenges they face and achievements they have made.

Izborsk Museum Preserve got a lot of inspiration for future work and outlined new directions of its development. This cooperation was also a great learning opportunity for American colleagues who found their visits most educative and expressed hopes for future cooperation.
