A new exhibition “Icon: from a prayer to an image” will be opened on June, 24 in the exhibition rooms of merchant Belyanin’s estate (Pechorskaya str., 39).

Icons are one of the foundations of religious live of Orthodox people and they demand special perception from the viewer. Modern people, despite rich spiritual traditions, are very often very little acquainted with the symbolism of icons and know almost nothing about the peculiarities of their creation. Not understanding the meaning of separate images, not remembering very well the Holy Scripture, modern people very often give a glance at icons, leaving without attention both their religious and artistic meaning.

The exhibition is to help modern visitors to actually see icons, to learn to read the meanings inherent in them, and also to unveil the mystery of their creation. Because an icon starts not with a wooden board and not even with a sketch on paper – it starts with a prayer in the soul of the icon painter.
