State historical-architectural, landscape and natural museum-preserve «Izborsk»

An exhibition dedicated to the history of flax growing in the Pskov region has been opened again in the inner yard of Merchant Shvedov’s house (Pechorskaya str., 32 )

The exhibition features objects from the funds of Izborsk State Museum Reserve that were used for flax growing and flax treatment, such as a scythe, a comb, a brake, a scutch, a spinning wheel, a yarnwindle and other objects and also photographic materials with comments.

In the territory of the Pskov Region fiber corps were grown since ancient time, very probably before Slavonic people came and settled in the area. In the course of time flax growing became one of the most important sectors of peasant economy. 4/5 of cultivated land was used for flax growing. Flax fiber was exported to England and Holland where it was used to make sailcloth.

In the 19th century peasants continued to grow a lot of flax. As a result of flax selection a famous all over Russia and outside its territory Pskov sort of flax appeared. It was considered to be the best sort of flax in Russia. There was not much of it and it was quite expensive.

The seeds of Pskov flax were exported to France, Belgium, Germany. The scotched fibers and flax straw were also exported. 1/3 of exported flax in 1846-1850 was produced in Pskov area.

The exhibition is open daily from 10.00 a.m. to 18.00 p.m.
