State historical-architectural, landscape and natural museum-preserve «Izborsk»

The opening of the exhibition entitled “The Battle of Poltava broke out!” will take place on July 11 at 15.00 in the Museum of History of Pechory (Mezhdunarodnaya str., 6). The exhibition has been organized by State Museum Monument St. Isaak’s Cathedral and  Izborsk State Museum Reserve for History, Architecture and Land. The exhibition is dedicated to the 310th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava and to the history of the creation of St. Sampson's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

The banners feature fragments of ancient 17th century engravings: “The plan of the capital city of St. Petersburg with the main avenue” by I. Sokolov and M. Makhayev and ”The Battle of Poltava” by Nicolas de Larmessin from the original drawing by P.D. Marten the Young. Above the entrance to the museum there is Kaplunovskaya icon of the Holy Theotokos, supported by flying angels. This picturesque composition decorates the interior of St. Sampson’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

The exhibition will be open for visitors until September 8, 2019.

           

St. Sampson’s cathedral was founded by Peter the Great in 1709 as a sign of gratitude to heavenly protection to Russian Army during the Battle of Poltava. St. Sampson’s Cathedral was seriously damaged during the blockade of Leningrad and during after World War II period. In 1984 the cathedral was given into the care of State Museum Monument St. Isaak’s Cathedral. For many years the museum professionals were carrying out serious restoration of St. Sampson’s Cathedral. In December 2003 the  Museum Monument St. Sampson’s Cathedral was opened for visitors as a branch of State Museum Monument St. Isaak’s cathedral.

An exhibition, dedicated to the Battle of Poltava was opened inside the cathedral. St. Sampson’s cathedral is a unique church of St. Petersburg, that has retained most of the images dating back to 1720-1760, including icons painted by A. Kvashnin, A. Pospelov and T.Bazhenov. The collection of the cathedral’s icons includes icons dates back to late 17th- early 20th century. In February 2017 St. Sampson’s Cathedral was given into the care of the Russian Orthodox Church.
