A delegation of Seto People has taken part in the International Forum “The Year of Languages of Indigenous People”.

 This event took place on March 20-22 in Khanty-Mansiysk, with about 500 people participating in it. The delegation of the Pskov Region included representatives of small in number Seto People: Heliu Mayak, Malle Bogachova and Elena Variksoo, all of them being museum professionals of Izborsk Museum Reserve.

At the Forum's festive opening the opening address of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin was read out. It included the following statement: “The preservation of languages of indeginous people is of great, international importance. Today our country has joined this initiative.”

Elena Variksoo made her report “The language of Seto People and Science” at the section “The Role of Science in the Preservation and Development of Languages of Indeginous People.” Elena told the participants of the conference about the  specifics of Seto Language, the main one being the absence of written language. People learn their language in every day life and with the help of national folklore. In 2009 the Seto People tradition of singing in many voices, called “leelo”, was acknowledged to be a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

More to that, a language camp for children, where they study Seto language, has been annually taking place in Seto People Homestead Museum in Sigovo Village (the Pechory District of the Pskov Region) for 11 years.

Children living in Pechory District study Seto Language getting acquaintanted with the culture and everyday life of Seto People.
