Izborsk people have always been proud of their local orchestra playing string folk instruments. When in 1920-s Izborsk was part of Estonia, young people in Izborsk were dreaming of creating their own orchestra and performing Russian folk music. The orchestra was created. Initially there were 13 musicians in the orchestra, headed by Anatoliy Sergeyevich Polibin. People would gather in someone’s house, perform music, sing and dance. The first concert was given in the house of Andrey Gorodskiy. Izborsk music society was registered on February 28, 1929.

A school orchestra of Russian folk instruments was organized in Izborsk in 1936-1937. After finishing school young musicians would join the main orchestra. The professionalism of musicians was growing as well as their number, which eventually reached 35. During the Great Patriotic War the musicians of the orchestra were fighting against the Nazis. Twelve of them never came back home.

Nevertheless, the orchestra continued to exist. After the War sons and grandsons of the musicians who died fighting in the war took the place of their fathers and grandfathers. In 1948 the orchestra took part in the All Russia’s Festival of Amateur Performers in Moscow and had the honor of performing at the final concert in the Bolshoi Theatre. Izborsk musicians were presented new instruments and costumes. In 1963 and 1967 the orchestra participated in the festivals of amateur performers in Leningrad and received the title of a laureate.

In 1969 Izborsk folk instruments orchestra was granted the title of a popular ensemble.

In 1978-1982 Leonid Nikolayevich Panov directed the orchestra. Later he became the Director of Izborsk Museum Reserve.

The musical traditions of Izborsk are preserved now. The orchestra continues its rehearsals and new people join it.  Russian folk music is still performed in Izborsk.

We will be happy to see you at the concert of Izborsk folk music orchestra in Izborsk Culture House (Pskovskaya str., 47) on February 28 at 14.00 p.m.
