The Museum of History of Pechory would like to invite everyone to come to the museum on January 5 at 15.00 to attend the presentation dedicated to his Highness Peter Khristianovich Wittgenstein, a famous military leader and a hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, a Chevalier of the Order of St. Andrew the First-called and of many other Russian military decorations, a General Field Marshal.

An exhibition, dedicated to Pskov heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812 and to General Field Marshal Peter Khristianovich Wittgenstein, a noble officer who dedicated all his life to serving his country and defending its borders, has been opened in the museum’s exhibition hall “For Faith, Tzar and Country”.

Pskov militia troops were created in July 1812. About 6200 countrymen and 133 noblemen enrolled in it. Moreover in the southern parts of Pskov Province armed guards were created from the detachments of peasants. They were very active in Nevel, Toropets and Velikiye Luki.

People, mostly peasants, donated about 16 million rubles for the war needs. It was more than in other Russian Provinces. Pskov clergy made their contribution, having donated for the needs of the Russian army over 20 kilograms of silver and 342 grams of gold, as well as various supplies.

Local people were supplying Wittgenstein’s corps with food, forage, horses and clothes. The people of Pskov Province, mostly peasants, provided the army with 300000 horses and about 15000 sheepskin fur coats.

Pskov people justly considered Peter Khristianovich Wittgenstein their savior from the enemy intrusion and were very grateful to him for their salvation. In Pskov local Marshals of Nobility wanted to put up a monument to Wittgenstein in the very center of Pskov, but he did not approve of it. A delegation from Pskov visited him and presented him an icon of Pskov Saint Prince Vsevolod.

The Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel was erected in the Monastery on the initiative of the head of Pechory Assumption Monastery that was supported with great enthusiasm by Wittgenstein, who donated money for that. Inside the cathedral there are two silver plated boards with the names of the warriors of Wittgenstein’s corps who died in the war engraved on them. A banner of Pskov Protection units was also handed over to the monastery.

A monument to Peter Khristianovich Wittgenstein was put up in Pechory in 2015. It was done with the efforts of Pskov Assumption monastery, the Center of National Glory of Russia and the Administration of the Pskov Region.

Izborsk State Museum Reserve would like to express our sincere gratitude to State Archives of the Pskov Region for providing us with documents on the history of the Patriotic War of 1812.

We invite people living in Pechory and the guests of the town to attend the presentation in the Museum of History of Pechory (Mezhdunarodnaya str., 6) at 15.00 p.m. on January 5, 2019.
