State historical-architectural, landscape and natural museum-preserve «Izborsk»

10 June 2017

Dear visitors!

We would like to invite you to attend the opening of the exhibition entitled “Open History”, which will take place in Izborsk on June 2017 at 14.00. The exhibition is located in the Archaeological Depository in the outbuilding of Merchant Anisimov’s house (Pechorskaya str., 41a). The Depository was equipped in 2014 to store over 60 thousand archaeological artefacts.

The collection of objects discovered by archaeologists under the supervision of an outstanding archaeologist, an Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences Valentin Vasilyevich Sedov, enables us to study thoroughly the history of Izborsk, one of the most ancient towns in Russia. The collection includes unique artefacts dating back to different periods: from moulded ceramics of Pskov Long Barrow Culture (5-7th cent. B.C.) to objects discovered in Izborsk Fortress (14-17 cent. A.D.).

Some of the artefacts are exhibited for the first time, such as the collection of fragments of pottery with various pottery makers' marks – the subject of discussion among researchers, or forged cookware dating back to the 10th-13th centuries.

A wooden lining of a well dating back to the 16th century and discovered in 2011 inside the remains of Ploskaya Tower of Izborsk Fortress is one of the unique exhibits of the Depository.
