We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Nikolay Petrovich Tokarev, the President of Transneft' PAO for the priceless gift - the Illustrated Chronicle of Ivan IV – to Izborsk State Museum Reserve. This unique illustrated edition in modern Russian language contains copies of 16th century miniatures and manuscripts.

The Illustrated Chronicle was created in the 16th century, being commissioned by Ivan IV for the purposes of educating his children. It is the largest compilation of historical information ever assembled in medieval Russia. Macarius, the Metropolitan of Moscow and all Russia and one of the best-educated people of his time, supervised the work of the best scribes and iconographers working at the chronicle. Nowadays numerous sheets of rag paper and miniatures stored in different archives were compiled into books.

In Izborsk Museum exhibition “The Chronicle of Ancient Izborsk: from the Beginning of Russia to the Battle of Poltava” several miniatures from The Illustrated Chronicle of Ivan IV are exhibited.

Izborsk Museum Reserve received 33 volumes of the unique edition, this treasury of wisdom and knowledge, which will be used in research work, historical interpretation and education of children. The manuscripts created for the children of the Tsar 500 years ago will be used in educating our children.
