Monday – «TheMeeting»

Traditionally the first day was dedicated to preparations for the festivities and to visiting relatives. On this day parents in law sent their daughter in law to visit their co-parents-in-law. And then went to visit their own relatives as well. On Monday a Maslenitsa effigy was made of straw and old clothes, mounted on a pole, placed on the sledge and carried around the village. On the first day of Maslenitsa festivities children and grown-ups enjoyed slides and swings, performances of travelling minstrels, sweets and pancakes. Not to do that meant to have bad luck in the future. The first pancake made in the house was given to the poor. In addition children visited their neighbors asking for a treat.

This day was in the middle of Maslenitsa week. Three days had passed and there were still three days of festivities ahead. On Thursday people used to celebrate all day long, dancing and singing chastushkas (four-line rhymed poems on humorous themes).

Newly wedded couples had to ride down hills in sledges kissing each other. If they refused to do that they were pushed into the deep snow and covered with it up to the neck.

Fistfights were frequent on this day. The fighters had to keep their head cool and always remember that honour and dignity are most important. According to the rules it was prohibited to hide anything heavy in your mittens, to hit someone below the belt or on the back of the head. Usually fistfights were organized on the ice of a river or a lake. It could be a fight between two people or wall-to-wall fist fighting.

If one of the rivals fell down the fight was stopped and the winner was treated with pancakes and pies. Such festivities attracted both grown-ups and children.

The fifth day of Maslenitsa Festivities –mothers-in-law visiting their sons-in-law.

On this day the son in law invited his mother in law to come over and treated her with pancakes. In the morning he asked his relatives to go to his mother in law’s place and invite her to his house. The more respect he wanted to show to his mother in law the more people he would send to do that.

On Friday morning young unmarried women used to make a lot of pancakes. At noon they would carry pancakes in bowls on their heads to the ice hills, where young men were expecting them to try their pancakes. When a young man liked the girl he hurried to try her pancakes to find out if she would be a good housewife.

The sixth day of Maslenitsa – relatives visiting their daughter in law.

On Saturday the young wife invited her husband’s relatives to her house to treat them with delicious food and give each of them presents.

Maslenitsa effigy had already grown old. It was the day to say good bye to it.

In the evening Maslenitsa effigy was carried out of the yard and burnt down.

This was how people used to say good-bye to the winter and greet the spring. They celebrated to the fullest as if on these days they wanted to have all the possible fun they would not have during the Great Lent.
