State historical-architectural, landscape and natural museum-preserve «Izborsk»

14 January 2017

The Old New Year which falls on January 14 in the Gregorian calendar will be the last holiday in the row of winter holidays enjoyed in Russia.  The tradition to celebrate the coming of the New Year on this day appeared in 1918 when the Gregorian calendar was officially adopted while the Russian Orthodox Church continued to use the Julian calendar. January 14 is also the memorial day of St. Basil the Great.

The Old Style New Year is a great opportunity to immerse oneself in the fairytale atmosphere and visit relatives and friends without all the fuss which accompanied the preparations for January 1 celebrations.

Visiting Izborsk on this day is a great idea. You will be able to enjoy the wonderful winter landscape, fresh air, peace and quiet of Izborsk fortress, visit the famous Slavonic springs, feed the swans, go on a guided tour and take part in master classes. Horseback riding in Izborsk-Mal’skaya valley will give you lots of positive emotions and great impressions.  The museum’s Blinnaya (Pancakes) café is a perfect place to get warm by the Russian stove, to try the main dish of St. Basil’s day - buckwheat porridge, the best pancakes with various fillings and herbal tea prepared with herbs growing in Izborsk valley.

Come and bring your friends! You will have a lot of fun!
